Nomads of the South, Kyrgyzstan
Next Departure:
29 August - 8 September 2027
Venture deep into Southern Kyrgyzstan, exploring remote valleys, high summer pastures and traditional nomadic communities.
Southern Kyrgyzstan is home to some of the country’s most incredible landscapes, but we’re going much deeper than the usual routes. This journey takes us into remote valleys, small villages and high summer pastures where few travellers ever make it.
Even if you’ve been to Kyrgyzstan or travelled around Central Asia before, you’ll see a side of the region that most people never get to experience. We’ll ride horseback through the mountains, hike between remote pastures, stay with local families and sleep under the stars in the mountains.
It’s a proper adventure, with plenty of time spent away from the usual tourist trail and immersed in traditional nomadic life. If you’re looking to go beyond the familiar and discover a side of Kyrgyzstan that still feels genuinely untouched, this is the trip for you.
Make friends, for life.
Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with friends, you’re all welcome!

Remote & Authentic Cultural Experiences
We know the places we travel to well, and over the years we’ve built strong relationships with local families and communities in some genuinely remote corners of the world. That local knowledge and those connections allow us to take you beyond the usual routes and away from the crowds.
We want our trips to feel like more than simply passing through. Where possible, we’ll spend time with local families, share meals and experiences, and give you a chance to see what life is really like in the places we visit. It’s those personal connections and access to places few travellers reach that make our trips different.
Where You'll Be Staying
Remote Mountain Camping & Yurts
Some nights we’ll stay in traditional yurt camps, while others we’ll camp in tents deep in the mountains, far from roads, towns and modern comforts. These are remote, rugged places where the landscape is the backdrop and the mountains are right outside your tent.
Meals are home-cooked by your hosts, with hearty local food, plenty of hot tea and a genuine taste of life in the mountains.
When we’re camping, things are even simpler. We’ll carry what we need, set up camp in remote mountain valleys and spend the night under the stars. Facilities are basic or sometimes non-existent, so you’ll need to be comfortable with a few days away from the usual comforts of everyday life.
That’s part of what makes this trip so special. We’re heading into places where very few travellers go, spending time in remote summer pastures and communities where traditional nomadic life is still part of the landscape. This isn’t about luxury. It’s about getting right into the heart of Southern Kyrgyzstan and experiencing the mountains as they really are.
Local Comforts,
Heartfelt Hospitality
Family-run Guest Houses
These guest houses are run by local families and offer a more traditional bed-and-breakfast style of accommodation. You’ll sleep in basic but comfortable double rooms, with access to shower facilities.
Expect warm hospitality and a chance to connect with the people who call these remote regions home. These stays offer a genuine look into everyday life in Kyrgyzstan’s smaller villages and towns. It’s all part of the journey: authentic, grounded, and unforgettable.
FAQ
-
You’ll fly into Osh International Airport (OSS) in Osh, the south of Kyrgyzstan. This is where the trip begins and ends, and we’ll provide group transfers to and from the airport on the arrival and departure days.
-
May through September is a great time to travel in Kyrgyzstan, although conditions vary considerably depending on altitude. May brings mild, pleasant days in the valleys, while July and August are the warmest months and offer the best conditions for high-mountain trekking, horse riding and yurt stays. September is cooler and often brings clear skies and comfortable daytime temperatures. Expect roughly 20–30°C (68–86°F) in the valleys during the warmer months, with temperatures dropping to around 10–20°C (50–68°F) in the mountains. At higher elevations, nights can be close to freezing even in July and August.
Pack light clothing for warm, sunny days, along with layers, a warm fleece or jacket and rain protection for cooler evenings and mountain conditions. The weather can change quickly at altitude, so layers are essential whether you're hiking, travelling through the valleys or staying in a yurt camp.
-
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travellers (including those from the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) can enter Kyrgyzstan visa-free for short stays. We’ll provide guidance once you book, but it’s always best to check the latest entry requirements before travelling.
-
Yes, in hotels and guesthouses you’ll be able to charge your devices. Kyrgyzstan uses the Type C and Type F plugs (European standard, 220V).
In yurt camps, there is usually no electricity for charging, so we recommend bringing a power bank or solar charger.
-
Wi-Fi is available in most guesthouses and hotels, but not in yurts or remote areas.
We’ll can arrange for you to get a local SIM card with data at the start of the trip, keeping you connected when possible, but in Kyrgyzstan’s wild landscapes, sometimes disconnecting is part of the experience.
-
This trip is designed for adventurers of all backgrounds — whether you’re a hiker, cultural explorer, or simply curious about experiencing Kyrgyzstan in an authentic way.
Some days include multi-hour hikes or horseback rides that require generally good fitness, so a moderate level of stamina is recommended.
Solo travellers, couples, and groups are all welcome. The group size is small (max 10), so you’ll share this journey with like-minded explorers while still having personal space.

What type of trip is this?
11 days and 10 nights exploring a lesser-travelled side of Southern Kyrgyzstan. We’ll head deep into remote valleys and high summer pastures, travelling by horseback, on foot and by rugged local vehicles.
Along the way, we’ll stay with local families, sleep in tents beneath the mountains and spend time in communities where traditional nomadic life is still a part of everyday life. With a small group of no more than 10 people, there’s plenty of time to connect with the people around you and properly experience this remote corner of Kyrgyzstan.
Who is this trip for?
Travellers who want to go beyond the usual sights and explore a side of Kyrgyzstan that few people get to see. You don’t need to be an experienced horse rider, but you should be comfortable spending time outdoors, hiking through mountain terrain and embracing a few days where things don’t always go exactly to plan.
Solo travellers and groups are welcome. Along the way, you’ll share meals with local families, ride through mountain valleys, camp beneath the stars and spend time with your fellow travellers in some truly remote places.
